Airports
Flights leave from JFK or Newark (EWR) and arrive at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) in Mumbai, a major hub for onward flights to Gujarat, Goa, Pune, Hyderabad and South India.
Direct flights
Air India has operated direct flights to Mumbai from both JFK and Newark. In summer 2026 it suspended its JFK–Mumbai service for June to August while increasing Newark–Mumbai, and some flights have been routed with a stop in Europe. Nonstop flying time is typically around 15 to 16 hours.
Schedules are changing often. Since 2025, airspace restrictions and high fuel costs have led some airlines to suspend, reduce or reroute India flights - some "direct" services now make a fuel stop in Europe or India on the way. Always check the exact routing and total travel time before you book; we confirm this with you in every quote.
One-stop options
Mumbai is well connected through Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi, London, Frankfurt, Paris, Amsterdam and Istanbul. These routings can be good value, especially when direct flights are full or rerouted, with total travel time typically around 18 to 24 hours.
Tips for this route
- Traveling on to Ahmedabad, Goa or Bengaluru? Booking the connection on one ticket usually protects you if the first flight is late
- Mumbai's monsoon (roughly June to September) can cause delays - allow extra time for connections
- For family events, compare flying into Mumbai with flying closer to your final city
Documents you will need
US passport holders need either an Indian visa (many use the India e-Visa) or an OCI card with their valid US passport. Check your passport validity and blank pages well before you fly.
